ABOUT THE ARTIST
Esther Boesche is a contemporary conceptual artist and fine art photographer, originally from Germany. Her creative journey began in early childhood on the picturesque shores of Northern Germany, instilling a profound connection to nature and a passion for sociological and political exploration. The artist is based in New York, but still maintains a summer studio in a quiet ocean town in Northern Germany, that supports her creativity and keeps her connected to nature and the inspiration she draws from this very particular environment.
Currently calling New York City home, the artist draws inspiration from the dynamic urban landscape and cultural diversity of New York. Her artistic practice spans photography, drawing, paper arts, sculpture, installation, text art, and public interventions—each serving as a canvas to explore the laws of the universe and the characteristics of the human soul. Boesche’s works are a deep exploration of identity, examining cultural predilections and how we form and choose our identities. She delves into the impact of time, environment, cultural and social systems and childhood on our sense of self, investigating what makes us human. Her work contrasts the identities and personalities we adopt with our true selves at a soul level, advocating for community awareness and authenticity in self-expression.
Esther Boesche’s artistic journey started in childhood, evolving through roles as a graphic designer and international arts educator. Formal education at the renowned Muthesius School of Fine Arts in Northern Germany paved the way for her multidisciplinary approach. In 2013, inspired by the legacy of American photographers, Boesche ventured to New York City, graduating with an MFA in advanced photographic studies from the International Center of Photography (ICP-BARD College) in 2015.
Honored with the DAAD fellowship and the ICP BARD College Director’s Scholarship, her photography earned a nomination for the FAPA Prize in 2016. Her journey continued with a prestigious selection for a PhD Fellowship in Philosophy and Photography at Rice University and the University of Arizona in 2022.
Boesche’s work has left its mark internationally, featured in exhibitions across American museums, galleries, and private collections in Europe and the U.S. She has been published in esteemed art magazines and books. Beyond her individual practice, Boesche has curated and co-curated exhibitions and pop-up shows, championing emerging and mid-career artists in Brooklyn, Chinatown, and the Wall Street District.
Esther Boesche is a member of Solas Studio Gallery located in the Flatiron District, In Manhattan NYC, and part of the Saint Marks Arts artist collective in the East Village.
