Breaking Glass – Solo Exhibition at Soam Studio Bushwick

The title “Breaking Glass” is derived from a German expression dating back to the 1600s, comparing the fragility of human luck to the breakability of glass. In this context, breaking too much glass signifies being a troublemaker, disturbing others’ peace, or setting overly ambitious goals contrary to societal expectations.

The works explore the impact of cultural and familial conditioning on the artist, influenced by her parents’ own conditioning. Household objects play a significant role, reflecting the importance of domestic life in German culture, where spending time in the kitchen or doing housework is common. Objects like tulips, coffee cups, and irons are linked to strong German daily rituals as experienced by the artist in her childhood.

Breaking Glass was inspired by the artist’s relocation from Germany to New York City in 2016, exposing her to a culture fundamentally different from her own. This project serves as a means to understand her childhood and the cultural conditioning of her native country.
